Nubuck Leather: Nap Time

Nubuck Leather: Nap Time

What is Nubuck leather?

Nubuck leather is created by taking the outer layer of the calf hide, also known as the top grain, and lightly buffed to achieve a fine, velvety nap. Unlike suede leather, which comes from the underside from the hide, nubuck is more durable and feels less "hairy". Imagine suede without the hairy feeling, that's what nubuck looks and feels like.

Why use Nubuck leather?

It's all about the texture. It has a matte, velvet-like surface that looks and feels wonderful to the touch, but also aging gracefully over time with a gentle patina. There's nothing quite like nubuck leather.

However, this texture comes with a cost - it requires more maintenance than regular smooth leathers. Regular brushing will help lift the nap and prevent a flat look while protective sprays are recommended to guard against water and stains. Like suede leather, nubuck is a little more water absorbent than other leathers. If wet, let it dry naturally before brushing it back into shape.
