Strap Measurement Guide

There are two ways to find out the lug width of your watch.

  1. Firstly, you can Google "<watch brand and model> lug width" and see if there is an answer from the brand's website, or some other websites.
  2. Alternatively, you can simply take a ruler and measure the lug width directly on your watch.

Lug widths are typically in whole numbers, and while the most common lug widths are between 18-22mm, they can go down to 8mm or up to 32mm even. Our ready stock straps are available in 12mm,14mm,16mm, 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, 21mm, 22mm, 24mm and 26mm. If you need other lug widths, you can have it custom made.

You will then need to purchase a strap with the same lug width. For example, if your watch has a lug width of 20mm, you will need a 20mm strap to fit your watch.

FAQ

What is the lug width of my watch?

You can refer to our lug-width guide here.

The lug width of your watch determines the strap size to ensure a proper fit.

What is the width of my original buckle?

To measure the buckle width, use the same method as measuring the lug width. Simply measure the distance between the two ends of the buckle where it attaches to the strap. This ensures the buckle width matches the strap for a secure and proper fit. Use a ruler or caliper for precise measurement, typically in millimeters.

How do I change my watch strap?

Here are the three most common strap-to-case mechanisms for Panerai and how to handle them:

1. The Screw Bar System

Common on: Luminor Marina (standard), older Submersibles, and Radiomir 1940 cases.

This is the most "classic" Panerai system. The strap is held by a threaded bar that screws directly into the lug.

  • Step 1: Place the watch face down on a soft cloth.
  • Step 2: Use a high-quality 1.6mm or 1.4mm flat-head screwdriver. Insert it into the screw head on the side of the lug.
  • Step 3: Apply firm downward pressure (to avoid slipping and scratching the lug) and turn counter-clockwise until the screw is free.
  • Step 4: Push the bar out through the strap using the tip of your screwdriver or a toothpick.
  • Step 5: Slide the bar through your new strap, align it with the lug holes, and screw it back in clockwise until snug. Do not over-tighten.

2. The Quick-Release Push Button System

Common on: Modern Luminor 1950s and newer Submersible models.

This is arguably the easiest system in the watch world. It uses a tiny spring-loaded button on the underside of the lugs.

  • Step 1: Look at the underside (back) of the lugs. You will see a small circular button on one side of each lug.
  • Step 2: Use the plastic "push tool" provided in your Panerai box (or a wooden toothpick).
  • Step 3: Simultaneously press the tiny button down while using a second tool (or the other end of the Panerai tool) to push the bar out from the side of the lug.
  • Step 4: The bar will slide out easily. Remove the old strap.
  • Step 5: To install, slide the bar into the new strap. Place one end of the bar into a lug hole, press the underside button again, and click the bar into the opposite hole.

3. The Radiomir "Wire Lug" System

Common on: Classic Radiomir cases (e.g., PAM 210, PAM 183).

Radiomirs don't have traditional lugs; they have thin wire loops that are secured by screws on the back of the case.

  • Step 1: Turn the watch over. You will see four small screws located near the base of the wire loops on the caseback.
  • Step 2: Use a small flat-head screwdriver to remove the two screws for one side of the strap.
  • Step 3: Gently pull the wire loop away from the case. The "wire" will actually split into two L-shaped pieces or a single U-shape depending on the model.
  • Step 4: Slide the wire out of the old strap and insert it into the new strap.
  • Step 5: Fit the wire ends back into the case notches and replace the screws. Note: These screws are very tiny; be careful not to lose them!
