Strap Measurement Guide

There are two ways to find out the lug width of your watch.

  1. Firstly, you can Google "<watch brand and model> lug width" and see if there is an answer from the brand's website, or some other websites.
  2. Alternatively, you can simply take a ruler and measure the lug width directly on your watch.

Lug widths are typically in whole numbers, and while the most common lug widths are between 18-22mm, they can go down to 8mm or up to 32mm even. Our ready stock straps are available in 12mm,14mm,16mm, 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, 21mm, 22mm, 24mm and 26mm. If you need other lug widths, you can have it custom made.

You will then need to purchase a strap with the same lug width. For example, if your watch has a lug width of 20mm, you will need a 20mm strap to fit your watch.

FAQ

What is the lug width of my watch?

There are 2 ways to find the correct strap size for your IWC Pilot watch:

  1. Use a digital caliper or ruler to measure the lug width (the distance between the inside of the lugs where the strap fits):
  • 20 mm lug width: Mark XX, Mark XVIII, Mark XVII, Mark XVI, Chronograph 41 (IW3881), Spitfire Chronograph, Top Gun Automatic (41mm)
  • 21 mm lug width: Big Pilot 43 (IW3293), Chronograph 43 (IW3777 / Le Petit Prince), Top Gun Chronograph (44.5mm)
  • 22 mm lug width: Big Pilot 46 (IW5010 / IW5009), Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar, Timezoner
  1. Check the model reference number:
The model reference number (beginning with "IW") is engraved on the case back, or listed on your warranty card, certificate, and original purchase receipt. This reference directly indicates your specific model and its corresponding lug width.

Examples of model references:

  • 20 mm Fits: IW3282 (Mark XX), IW3270 (Mark XVIII), IW3881 (Chronograph 41), IW3269 (Top Gun Automatic)
  • 21 mm Fits: IW3293 (Big Pilot 43), IW3777 (Chronograph 43)
  • 22 mm Fits: IW5010 (Big Pilot 46), IW3950 (Timezoner)
What is the width of my original buckle?

To measure the buckle width, use the same method as measuring the lug width. Simply measure the distance between the two ends of the buckle where it attaches to the strap. This ensures the buckle width matches the strap for a secure and proper fit. Use a ruler or caliper for precise measurement, typically in millimeters.

How do I change my watch strap?

Type 1: Installing on a Traditional Spring Bar Setup

If the watch is currently using standard spring bars (or if the customer removes the factory IWC bars to use aftermarket ones), this is a straightforward drop-in installation.

  • Step 1: Turn the watch face down on a soft microfiber cloth to protect the crystal and bezel.
  • Step 2: Ensure the watch case has standard spring bars removed, leaving the lug holes completely open.
  • Step 3: Take your new strap and insert one end of its integrated quick-release spring bar into the bottom lug hole.
  • Step 4: Using your fingernail, retract the integrated quick-release knob on the strap backward to compress the pin.
  • Step 5: Align the strap with the upper lug hole, release the knob, and gently wiggle the strap until you hear the pin click securely into place. Repeat for the other side.

Type 2: Interfacing with the IWC EasX-CHANGE® System

If the customer currently has an IWC OEM strap or bracelet mounted, the watch case utilizes IWC's factory fixed spring bars. To mount your standard quick-release strap, the factory IWC spring bars must be completely removed first.

⚠️ Critical Compatibility Note: Standard quick-release straps cannot "click" directly into the IWC EasX-CHANGE® system hardware. The integrated quick-release spring bar inside your strap must interface directly with the watch’s lug holes, not IWC's proprietary bars.

  • Step 1: Turn the watch face down on a soft surface.
  • Step 2: Remove the existing IWC OEM strap by pulling back its integrated EasX-CHANGE® lever and lifting it away.
  • Step 3: Use a standard spring bar tool to remove the factory IWC spring bars left behind in the lugs. (Store these safely, as they are proprietary to IWC straps).
  • Step 4: Once the watch lugs are completely empty, take your new standard quick-release strap.
  • Step 5: Slot one side of the strap's built-in pin into a lug hole, pull back the quick-release knob, slide it into the opposite lug hole, and release the knob to lock it in.
