Shell Cordovan: Horsing Around

Shell Cordovan: Horsing Around

What is Shell Cordovan?

Shell Cordovan is leather made from the superficial fascia, or shell (hence the name), of the lower layers of horse rump. The name "Cordovan" is a reference to Córdoba, Spain, where Shell Cordovan originated.

Unlike most leathers, Shell Cordovan is crafted from dense connective tissue beneath the hide’s surface, resulting in its distinctive glossy sheen, smooth finish, and unique resistance to creasing.

Why Shell Cordovan?

When it comes to watch straps (and shoes too), shell cordovan is something special. Instead of forming tiny creases like most leathers, it develops gentle ripples that grow into a rich, enviable patina over time. Its dense fibers also make it naturally more water-resistant, so it’s as practical as it is handsome. Of course, part of its charm comes from its rarity: each hide yields only a small piece of cordovan, and producing it requires immense time and craftsmanship. That scarcity, combined with its unmistakable finish, is what gives shell cordovan its prestige.
